What about Tommy Smith

Tommie Smith is a legendary American track and field athlete who became an iconic figure in the civil rights movement for his bold and courageous stand at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. After winning the gold medal in the 200-meter race and setting a world record, Smith, along with bronze medalist John Carlos, raised a black-gloved fist during the playing of the U.S. national anthem in a powerful and silent protest against racial injustice and inequality. This act of defiance, often referred to as the “Black Power Salute,” became one of the most enduring images of the 20th century, symbolizing the fight for civil rights, equality, and human dignity. For this brave gesture, Smith faced significant backlash, including death threats and the stripping of honors, but he stood firm in his beliefs, embodying the intersection of sports and activism. Tommie Smith’s protest transcended the athletic world, becoming a key moment in the global civil rights movement, and his legacy continues to inspire athletes and activists to use their platforms to challenge injustice.
